Alison Krauss and Robert Plant joined together in an effort to create an album of thirteen duets. This album is full of great surprises, but don't think it is the typical sound of either artist. They combine their unique voices to help create a modern version of songs using the styles and techniques used forty or fifty years ago. Robert Plant and Alison Krauss's Raising Sand will take you to a time that no one has been in years.
Although Robert is not a country singer he has a solid following just the same. Known mostly as the lead singer of the legendary rock group Led Zeppelin, he has decided to join forces with one of country's biggest stars. Their combined voices bring back to life the sound that Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris mastered back in their prime. The best way to describe this album is brilliant. The outcome will make the hair on your neck stand. Blending together the lead vocals gives a bone chilling effect that runs deep in your body.
Alison Krauss has been recognized by many as the talented bluegrass performer with an angelic voice. With more awards on her mantle than most artists can even comprehend, Alison has created an awesome new project that will go down as one of her greatest endeavors. As soon as the first song starts it is obvious the chemistry these two talented singers share. Above all the respect they have for each others talents has helped them in creating this record. Once the album is finished you will be left wanting more.
It is great to hear the music of the 60's and 70's come back to life. Every song on Raising Sand shares close harmonies and all the musical instruments from the past. It is obvious both artists share a deep love and respect for folk music and now they have dedicated a full album to it.
The first track on this awesome album is "Rich Woman." This is a tune about dating someone with an expensive lifestyle. "Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us" has the folk sound mixed with a Spanish style background. It truly has its own sound and I am not convinced any other duet could pull off such a unique sound, but they make it sound natural. "Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)" is a fun song that will get your feet moving with the fast beat and electric guitar. "Trampled Rose" is a personal favorite simply because it shows off Alison Krauss's voice with Robert in the background. The music is different as well. It actually has an "Oriental" sound from the beat of the drum to the strum of the string section.
No matter what side of the forum you stand on, the blending together of these awesome entertainers deserves to be listened to.
