Sleepless Nights Bottom Line:
There are very few female country singers with the power and presence of Kentucky native Patty Loveless. With her pure voice and stalwart traditional approach, she is one hundred percent everything a country singer should be, male or female. In this newest collection, Loveless gathers up some of the grand and glorious songs from the golden age of country music and gives them her own stamp, turning out what is, of course, nothing less than brilliant. You know the songs. You know the voice. Now listen and enjoy.About Patty Loveless
Patty Loveless has a list of awards and accolades as long as your arm. From being a member of the Grand Ole Opry to CMA and ACM nominations and awards to Grammys; from duets with artists such as George Jones, Dwight Yoakam, and Vince Gill to live performances all over the world, she's a driving force in country music and one of the best. She doesn't get as much press as some of course, she's never won American Idol or been seen on Dancing With The Stars but when it comes to talent, you just can't get any better than Patty Loveless. Hailing from Pikeville, Kentucky, she has been playing guitar and singing since she was a little girl, listening to the songs her idols sang, many of which she performs here and now, from George Jones weepers to Webb Pierce honky-tonk classics, each one of them done with as much honesty and authenticity as they were done originally. Many of the songs have been done by many others through the years, and it's a credit to Patty that while she makes them her own, she doesn't stray too far from the way they're supposed to sound.
'Sleepless Nights' - The Songs:
Included in the backing vocalists are folks like Vince Gill and one of Patty's neighbors, Jim Iler. It's a family affair, and it's clear Patty enjoys singing these songs and working with these folks. The songs are laid out perfectly, with chestnuts like "S/he Thinks I Still Care" and "Don't Let Me Cross Over," and the always wonderful "Crazy Arms," as well as the standard drinking tune, "There Stands The Glass" and the much-recorded plaintive anthem, "There Goes My Everything." Each track is lovingly crafted, perfectly presented, songs that speak eloquently of the golden age of Nashville, names like George Jones, Ray Price, Porter Wagoner, Charley Pride, Conway Twitty, Jack Greene, and yes, of course, she closes with the Hank Williams classic, "Cold Cold Heart." It's a pretty awesome cap to a pretty awesome disc, and no one does it better than Patty.
