Bottom Line:

Deana Carter was a ground breaking artist when she hit the charts in the late 1990's and has remained a strong force since. Remaining true to her country roots, Deana has recorded her new album The Chain as a reminder of not only where she came from, but the legends that inspired her. Singing their songs was not good enough, so she invited them to come into the studio and bring these songs to life Carter style.

As she releases her fifth studio album, Deana Carter shows no sign of slowing down and sounds better than ever. Although she has been out of the spotlight for a while, her ambition and sound still stand on a solid foundation that has never been broken. With her sweet, soulful sound she brings into the 21st century some of country music's most classic songs and even a couple rock tunes.

Deana teamed up with many of the legendary artists who made these tunes famous. Legends like Kris Kristofferson, Dolly Parton, Paul Simon, Jessi Colter, John Anderson, Willie Nelson and others lent their voices on these original hits. Teaming with these undeniable legends and creating music with friends resulted with a unique blend of sound and styles.

Kris Kristofferson is the first duet on the album. Although Kris wrote "Help Me Make It Through The Night" and had success with it, Sammi Smith made it a huge hit. Deana invited the Country Music Hall of Famer to bring back the original feel of the song. Their voices blended well which added to the pleasures of this great tune.

Everyone knows Dolly Parton's voice, personality, and the impact she has on the world, so she joined Deana on her original hit "Love Is Like A Butterfly." The voices of the two ladies fit like a glove. Deana continues this momentum throughout this ground breaking album.

Teaming up with superstars seemed to be Deana's vision when she entered into the studio, but she also wanted to focus in on some rock classics that impacted her life just as much as country music had. So, teaming with Paul Simon and Harper Simon they brought to life "The Boxer." Staying on the rock and roll train, Deana re-created "The Weight." Although The Band made this a huge hit, she added just enough to make it her own, yet not taking away from the classic feel.

Moving on to more duets, Jessi Colter teamed up with Deana on her classic hit, "I'm Not Lisa." A personal favorite for many years, Jessi Colter's version always gave me chills and this version added to that feeling.

Being that The Chain is full of classic songs which are now being created into duets, it was great to see John Anderson joining Deana on "Swingin'." This classic has been a favorite for country fans for two decades and hopefully this version will introduce other fans to it as well.

Willie Nelson has always opened his heart to duet opportunities. Doing so, they create a fresh sound for "On The Road Again." Deana continued to approach these songs with a classic touch by bringing in Shooter Jennings to fill some big boots. He took the spot of his late father Waylon Jennings on "Good Hearted Woman."

When you mix talents like Shooter and Deana the outcome is likely to be gold. Deana Carter has created an album that's a perfect addition to any country collection.
