Chris Knight - The Trailer Tapes

Drifter's Church
Bottom Line:

Armed with only his voice and a guitar, Chris Knight recorded one of his greatest sounding releases back in 1996. Frank Liddell was the producer back then and only recently did Ray Kennedy mix it into the final product you can purchase today. This is an eleven track album you can't miss.

Chris Knight is one of those artists who isn't afraid to dig down deep and get dirty when he writes or sings a song. His music is as raw and honest as you can get - and that is the reason I like it so much. With any Chris Knight album you know what you're going to get and it will always be something good.

"Backwater Blues" is about a man wanting to roll through the hard times instead of being left alone to drown. "This river ain't deep it's just a little cold. So put your arm around me, we'll find us a stepping stone," Chris sings. The relationship is bound to fail if the lady walks out on him. In "Spike Drivin' Blues" the man works all night laying the train track for the train master he hates. He has nothing but contempt for the man and his train. He used to run the brakes until the boss said it wasn't safe, so now he just drives the spikes.

Sometimes it doesn't take much to figure out that "Something Changed," even if you've only been away for a year. The woman he was with had a bright outlook on life and he just brought her down. He regrets coming back when he finds out she walked down the aisle with a man that makes her happy and here he is realizing what he lost out on. With a title like "Move On," you'd think it would be almost like a sequel to the previous song but it isn't. In this song, a man has his eyes set on his cousin's ex-wife and warns a city boy not to bring a switchblade to a pistol fight.

A very well-written song is "Hard Edges," which tells the story of a sweet little girl named Lisa, who loved to pretend she was a ballerina as she danced to the music in her head. That was her way of taking her mind away from the dad that came home with whiskey on his breath. Years down the road we find out that Lisa is now "Tina" and instead of dancing in the yard, she dances in a smoke-filled bar. Now she tries to hide her pain by drawing attention to other parts of her. "Hard edges hide a tender heart, you'd never know it's there." Two other great songs I like on here are "Leaving Souvenirs" and the closing "My Only Prayer."

It's hard to believe Chris recorded these songs over a decade ago and before his first major label album was released because he sounds as amazing back then as he does today. Music fans would be missing out on a gem if this collection was never released. I'll be listening to this one for a long time.
