Untold Truths Bottom Line
Hollywood icon Kevin Costner has joined up with some of his closest friends in order to release an album that has been years in the making. Every song that appears on this record gives the listener an inside look into the personal life and thoughts of Kevin Costner & Modern West. Although this album does not carry a typical country sound, there is a heavy "west coast" county influence that is becoming very popular among the independent music lovers. Untold Truths is an awesome record that is turning a lot of heads.About Kevin Costner
Whenever people hear Kevin Costner's name, they automatically associate him to Hollywood. He has been in countless movies such as "The Untouchables," "Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves," "JFK," "The Bodyguard," "Message In A Bottle," and even "The Guardian," but his most famous films have been "Dances With Wolves" and "Field Of Dreams."Well, there is so much to him than just acting. Going back about twenty years, Kevin and his friend, John Coinman, were working together in an acting workshop. After working together for a while, they started to realize that they shared a lot more interests than just acting and that was music. So, they sat down and started writing songs and just played music behind the scenes. Eventually this led to some live gigs, but nothing too permanent.
Once Kevin's career started to take off in Hollywood, his music ended up taking the backseat. Over the years, even with all of the success that he has had on the silver screen, there has always been a burning desire to make an album. So, he called up John Coinman and fellow Modern West members Blair Forward, Teddy Morgan, Larry Cobb, and Park Chisolm. At this point, it was still unknown where their dream would lead them, but they still felt that what they were doing was right.
To say that Kevin Costner has put acting on the back burner would be an injustice to his career, but to say that he is finally chasing his dreams in music is an understatement. He has become one of the biggest names in the movies, and now he is trying to make his name in country music.
Untold Truths - The Songs:
When I heard that Kevin Costner was releasing a country album, I automatically assumed that he was jumping on the "actors turning singers" train. Johnny Depp, Bruce Willis, and even Kevin Bacon have tried their hand in the recording industry, and some have turned out better than others. Well that is not the case with Kevin Costner & Modern Country. They have such a unique sound and their lyrics are full of everyday life situations and circumstances. On this record, fans can hear twelve original songs that have been written or co-written by Kevin Costner. There is no way anyone could have ever imagined that Kevin's musical ability was this impressive.
The first tune off of this record is "Long Hot Night." It is about a man who is going through a lot in his personal life and he seems to sit awake at night thinking about everything because it is too hot to sleep. It really has an awesome edge to it.
"Superman 14" (the first single) is interesting, and it starts off with a great fiddle solo. There is a certain "lonesome" feel to it that most songs attempt, yet seldom succeed. It can be taken different ways, but it seems to me to be about someone who can do anything, but is still very lonely.
A personal favorite is "Every Intention." Have you ever done something that you wanted to confess about, but it never seemed the time was right? If so, this is a song you can relate to.
"Five Minutes From America" is great, but "The Sun Will Rise Again" will blow your mind. It is about going through rough times, but in the end, it will always get better.
