Jim Lauderdale - Country Super Hits Vol. 1

Yep Roc Records
Bottom Line:

Country Super Hits Vol. 1 consists of thirteen tracks (all of which were co-written by Jim Lauderdale) and was produced by Odie Blackmon and Jim Lauderdale with the exception of "She's Got Some Magic Going On" (Shawn Camp) and "I Met Jesus In A Bar" (Leslie Satcher with Jim). It's a true country music lover's dream album, which is so often the case with this talented artist. You can't go wrong with this album so it's appropriate to have 'Hits' in the title.

There's nothing quite like a woman who is in a "Honky Tonk Mood Again." The couple doesn't go out every night but when they do they really live it up. "Playing On My Heart Strings" is about a woman who knows just the right thing to do to make the man fall for her even more than he already has. In "Two More Wishes," the man wants the lady of his dreams to come true so he can use the other two wishes on her. "You say you're mine for the rest of time. Every day we'd fall in love and that's what I want," Jim sings. He is hoping a genie living at the bottom of a beer bottle will grant him his wishes. You can't blame a man for being "Cautious" when it comes to relationships. Instead of rushing through something, he decides to take his time. "If You've Never Seen Her Smile" is a slow shuffle complete with use of drum brushes. Just looking at her could make anyone's day a little better. A song with a similar sound is "Are You Okay." All the man wants to do is try to talk things through and all she needs to do is let him.
A little more upbeat is "Single Standard Time." It's a classic sounding Jim Lauderdale song with cleverly crafted lyrics and great vocal delivery. He's wondering if she misses him now that he's gone. "I Met Jesus In A Bar" is sure to be a listener favorite from the album and has become one of my all-time favorite Jim Lauderdale songs. It's so classic it makes you hurt right along with the man in the song. "Change" happens. "That don't mean I don't love you," though, says Jim. The couple will part ways but things will work out better that way. When a woman is on a mission "You Can't Stop Her," especially when it comes to walking out the door. The upbeat tempo helps prove the fact she was lightning fast. Another great song is "She's Got Some Magic Going On." There's something mystical about the woman because she makes him fly just like a rocket and "She took a wounded dove and healed it with her love."
