Bottom Line:
Deryl Dodd last released an album back in 2004 and now fans can breathe a sigh of relief because he's back - this time with 'Full Circle.' The album contains eleven tracks and was produced by Brett Beavers. Out of the album's eleven tracks, seven are either soley written or co-written by Deryl Dodd, which makes for an interesting collection of lyrics.
"Wearin' A Hole" is the album's upbeat opener. It's one of those ultimate honky-tonk dance floor tunes. "I like the feel of my heels slidin' over the boards. I like the music they play behind those swinging doors. I'm wearin' a hole in a honky-tonk floor." "Thanks To The Man" would also be a good two-stepper, though it is a bit slower than the previous song. Thanks are in order for the man who dumped the lady in the song because if they were still together he wouldn't be with her. "I'm Not Home Right Now" is about a man who is lost in thoughts of the past. He used to share his life with someone else, but now she's gone and all he has are the memories. Jack Ingram joins Deryl in "That's The Stuff," where they both sing about turning things up and showin' what they're made of. A slower song is "Feels Like Home To Me," with wonderful lyrics like "You loved me back to life so sweet. You brought me in from the cold - girl you're everything that feels like home to me." There isn't a woman in the world who wouldn't want a man to feel that way about her.
Though Deryl says he's never been one to settle down, he decides to face the facts in "I Won't Run." He takes a look at himself in the mirror and says his past is no excuse for the actions he's shown to the women with whom he's been in a relationship. A blast from the past is "It's Only 'Cause You're Lonely," previously released on Deryl's self-titled album. The song has also been recorded by Victor Sanz on Hey Country and Clay Blaker (co-writer of the song along with Jim Lauderdale) on Rumor Town. "Someone Is Waiting For Me," sings Deryl, even when he may be feeling lost. Full Circle's last song is the upbeat, "Songs Of The Family." The music Deryl's mother and father made together still lives in him, and despite some change in the way the music is played he's starting to see things coming back to the way they used to be. At the very end of the last track, listeners are treated to a small snippet of an old recording of Deryl's family singing together. What a perfect way to close out the album and signify that things really have come Full Circle for Deryl Dodd.
