Definitive Collection - Loretta Lynn

The Bottom Line

Loretta Lynn has been called the Queen of Country Music, and for good reason. In this collection of songs culled from her early career to the late '70s, the proof is laid out in that most basic of languages, music. Lynn was a mere 25 years old in 1960, when her first song hit the charts, and her story is well known from the movie based on her book. But no matter how much you know about her life, it's her music that will last forever.

Guide Review - Loretta Lynn The Definitive Collection

Loretta Lynn was my first favorite female country singer. For some reason I'm very fussy about my girl singers; maybe it's because country has always been so very masculine a genre, or perhaps because very few female singers have the strength of character and power that Loretta Lynn brings to her songs. While all her tunes are feminine and all woman, they're never "girly." The 25 tracks selected for this collection are some of those best ones, including "You Ain't Woman Enough" and "Fist City," as well as duets with Conway Twitty, "Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man" and "As Soon As I Hang Up The Phone."

If I have any complaint about this disc, it's I'm not sure how it's "definitive" when there aren't any tracks from her recent discs, "Still Country" and the incredible "Van Lear Rose," or any of the songs she cut with Tammy Wynette and Dolly Parton as the Honky Tonk Angels. Still, with a full 25 tracks, it's hard to say just where they should have clipped back on her old tunes in favor of the more recent work. I might have chosen "Miss Being Mrs" over the cover of "She's Got You"; and while I do love the Conway duets, there is an entire "definitive collection" of their songs, so they could have included some of her historical recordings with Ernest Tubb.

No matter what she's singing, Loretta Lynn has always sparkled. Her music will live forever, and this collection is a great place to start listening. When you're listening to Loretta Lynn, you're listening to country.
