Guide Review - June Carter Cash - Ring of Fire: The Best of June Carter Cash
June Carter Cash was probably destined to be famous. She was one of the daughters of Maybelle and Ezra Carter, sister to Anita and Helen Carter, she married Johnny Cash. But June probably would have been famous, anyway, simply because she was so astronomically talented. As a musician, songwriter, comedienne, and performer, June Carter Cash simply shone. She became a member of the Grand Old Opry in the 1950's, she made people laugh with her skits and characterizations, and she touched the heart with her music.Compiled here are some of her finest songs, mostly gathered from her later albums, "Press On" and "Wildwood Flower," as well as a few tracks from the 60's and some unreleased material. June may have put off her solo recording career until the final years of her life, but it seemed every time she took to the studio it was an award-winning effort. She won Grammys for duets with husband Johnny Cash (both featured here), and two more for those last two albums.
June's voice is frail and sweet on some of the newer songs; feisty and full of humor in her early tracks. She claimed she was no vocalist, but she was a fine, fine performer, and her music is simply wonderful to listen to. It's a grand and delightful thing that this grand lady will live forever in these simple, warm, and honest recordings.
