Guide Review - John Denver - Definitive All-Time Greatest Hits
BMG Music released a 2-CD collection of some of John Denver's Greatest Hits. Music that defined what he was. There are no disappointments in the music, and it is easy to listen to from the start of the first track all the way through the end of the CD. On the twenty tracks of the first CD, there are two duets. The duet partners are as diverse as John Denver and he is as much at ease singing with Placido Domingo on "Perhaps Love" as he is partnering with Emmylou Harris on "Wild Montana Skies." Of course they included "Thank God I'm A Country Boy," "Annie's Song," "Take Me Home Country Roads" and "Sunshine on My Shoulders" which were all staples on country radio. "Leaving on a Jet Plane" and "Calypso" are two songs I remember well from my brief forays into a non-country station. John was truly one of the original cross-over artists, and unlike today's stars he didn't change anything about his music to help it fit in. It just fit on it's own merit. There isn't a whole lot I can say that hasn't already been said about John Denver. This is an excellent compilation of his music, and well worth adding to your collection. John's sound can only be described as classic and timeless. There are stars that may be huge for a short period of time, then they fade and few remember them down the road. John Denver's name and music will be out there for decades to come. He was one of the defining people that crossed several musical genres with his material.
