Mary Gauthier - Mercy Now

The Bottom Line

Mary Gauthier may have started songwriting later than the average artist but she certainly is one of the better ones to emerge. The comparison to the late Townes Van Zant is well-earned and a good starting point for Mary's real-life song subjects. "Mercy Now" is a wonderful major label debut album.

Guide Review - Mary Gauthier – Mercy Now

Have you ever wondered what inspired someone to become a singer/songwriter? Have you wanted authenticity in your music? Well then you're reading about the right artist. Mary Gauthier (pronounced go-shay) has overcome so many personal demons in her life that she could have a movie based on her life. What's the most stunning thing about Mary's Life? It's the fact that she didn't start writing songs until she was 35 years old, after she overcame her troubles.

"Mercy Now" is as consistent a record as anything Nanci Griffith or Patty Griffin have recorded throughout their careers. Like those two legendary singer/songwriters, Mary writes from her life experiences be it family, herself or people she's met along her incredible life. She's a poetic storyteller who weaves interesting stories on songs like "Falling Out Of Love" "Mercy Now," "Your Sister Cried", "Empty Spaces" and "I Drink." Fans of Blake Shelton will be familiar with "I Drink" for it it's also on his "Barn & Grill" Album. Fans of Harlan Howard songs will appreciate Mary's rendition of his fine "Just Say She's A Rhymer."

With interesting stories sung by Mary's expressive voice over laid-back melodies, "Mercy Now" is an interesting album. It's not completely a country album nor is it a rock or pop or a folk album. Like her contemporaries, Mary Gauthier has an eclectic mix of songs that defy categorization.
