Guide Review - Shawn Camp - Fireball
With solid "high lonesome" vocals that easily move from bluegrass-flavor to mainstream-styled country-pop, Camp is perfectly suited for this style of country. It embraces the modern sound without ever once losing the traditional feel. Of course, it does help a hidebound traditionalist like me to hear him praised by a no less a luminary than Guy Clark and, of course, Jim Lauderdale; that he's toured with my hero John Prine is another chalk mark in his favor.
So with this powerful background, Camp comes on strong with a new solo album to follow up his "Live at the Station Inn," released in 2004 on Oh Boy Records. "Fireball" is a strong disc, with some excellent songs showcasing Camp's tremendous songwriting skills as well as his pleasing vocals and good playing, and he's backed by some excellent artists, as well, including co-writer Billy Burnette (Fleetwood Mac, along with a million other credits). If you've known Camp all along, this is a great way to get to know his own voice, as well as his lyrics.
