Guide Review - Shawn Camp - Fireball
Shawn Camp may not be a name you know, but you sure know his writing. He's written songs for everyone, including "Two Piña Coladas" for Garth Brooks. He wrote "How Long Gone" for Brooks & Dunn, as well as songs for Alan Jackson, Joe Diffie, Blake Shelton, and he's been recorded by Jim Lauderdale; and to me, if another songwriter sings your songs, that's a real tip of the hat. In short, it's about time we heard from Shawn himself, and this is a great place for him to start. With solid "high lonesome" vocals that easily move from bluegrass-flavor to mainstream-styled country-pop, Camp is perfectly suited for this style of country. It embraces the modern sound without ever once losing the traditional feel. Of course, it does help a hidebound traditionalist like me to hear him praised by a no less a luminary than Guy Clark and, of course, Jim Lauderdale; that he's toured with my hero John Prine is another chalk mark in his favor.
So with this powerful background, Camp comes on strong with a new solo album to follow up his "Live at the Station Inn," released in 2004 on Oh Boy Records. "Fireball" is a strong disc, with some excellent songs showcasing Camp's tremendous songwriting skills as well as his pleasing vocals and good playing, and he's backed by some excellent artists, as well, including co-writer Billy Burnette (Fleetwood Mac, along with a million other credits). If you've known Camp all along, this is a great way to get to know his own voice, as well as his lyrics.
