Kentucky Headhunters - Flying Under the Radar

The Bottom Line

The Kentucky Headhunters are a highly under-rated group. It constantly amazes me how little radio recognition they receive. Their high powered country rock sound can turn to a soulful country ballad in a heartbeat. I haven't listened to a bad KH album yet and this one is no exception. Bottom line is that anyone who loves a strong country rock sound with some powerful ballads thrown in will absolutely not be disappointed in 'Flying Under the Radar.'

Guide Review - The Kentucky Headhunters - Flying Under the Radar

The Kentucky Headhunters have released some great music over the years. A lot of their albums have kind of slipped under the radar so with 'Flying Under the Radar' they are bringing back some songs from previous albums that maybe didn’t get the notice they should have. And this is an excellent album, so I can't imagine how these got overlooked the first time around.

We get off to a fun start with "Louisiana CoCo." The deep voice of guitarist Richard Young gives it a very different sound and quickly catches you up into the potential of the album. It is really hard to pick favorite songs because they are all really good. A few that stick out for me are "Go To Heaven," "Midnight Special," "Everyday People" and "Ashes of Love." There is a version of the old Roger Miller tune, "Chug-A-Lug" covered here with a dance mix beat, and once again you can hear the deep voice of Richard adding a little 'rap' flavor to the song. It is definitely lively and makes you tap your toes.

Overall, this album is just a well rounded selection of great music. I don't think anyone who simply likes good music would be disappointed to find this in their collection. Richard Young, Fred Young, Greg Martin, Anthony Kenney and Doug Phelps are a powerhouse of talent when they come together to make music. Their sound is uniquely theirs and they do it well. Simply put, it is good music.
