Guide Review - Flatt & Scruggs - Foggy Mountain Gospel
Gospel has been an integral part of rural Southern music, and when Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs were a part of Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys they both sang Gospel. When they branched out on their own, Gospel remained a large part of their music catalog. Using both standards from the old hymnbooks and new songs written by the current bluegrass artists of the time, Flatt & Scruggs recorded many Gospel tunes during their 19 years with Columbia Records.I have always enjoyed both Southern Gospel and the pure and honest music that is bluegrass. While contemporary music lovers may not appreciate the steeped in tradition music, I love it. "Go Home" was actually a top ten hit in 1961. "On the Rock Where Moses Stood" was a Carter family song and Mother Maybelle played autoharp on the song when it was recorded by Flatt & Scruggs. Some other great songs included on the album is the rousing "When the Saints Go Marching In," another Carter family song "God Gave Noah The Rainbow Sign," "I Saw Mother With God Last Night," "Bubbling in My Soul," "Paul & Silas" and many more great gospel songs.
I would definitely recommend this album to anyone enjoying the sound and tradition of true Southern Gospel music. The instrumentals are top notch and the vocals are pure and heartfelt. Flatt & Scruggs are icons in their field and this album is a real treasure for your collection.
