Guide Review - Foggy Mountain Jamboree - Flatt & Scruggs
This album features Lester Flatt with vocals in the true high, lonesome sound of bluegrass and Earl Scruggs with his unique style of banjo picking. They were a duo on Columbia Records for 19 years before parting ways. Their wives even got into the act, writing many of the songs their husbands made hits. Four of their songs are on this album. They wrote "Blue Ridge Cabin Home," which is a staple among blue grass performers. A couple of the instrumentals came from them as well. The album is a fairly even combination of the great ballads/story songs and instrumentals. Several of the songs were also written by one or both of the duo. Earl was great at arranging the music to fit their compositions. It was really hard to pick out favorite songs on this album because I enjoyed them all. There were several instrumentals, including the toe-tapping opening to the CD "Flint Hill Special." Then there was "Earl's Breakdown" and "Randy Lynn Rag." There are a couple of gospel tunes on here, a staple of bluegrass, "Pray For the Boys" and "Reunion in Heaven." Some great ballads are "Some Old Day," "It Won't Be Long" and "Blue Ridge Cabin Home." There is even a little Western Swing sound on "On My Mind." This album may be bluegrass, but these boys were able to give a little different sound to their songs to appeal to just about everyone. It is an excellent addition to any bluegrass or traditional music collection.
