Guide Review - George Jones - Hits I Missed, And One I Didn't
After 51 years in the recording industry, I think George is perfectly comfortable in his 'musical skin,' and the material he chose to record for this project is excellent. He decided to pay homage to some friends of his, as well as the songwriters, by recording a few songs he wished he'd recorded but passed on. In this incredible project, one of the songs is "The Blues Man." This was penned by Hank Williams, Jr. and also recorded by Alan Jackson. Jones delivers the song in a smooth, soulful manner and Dolly Parton joins in with a sympathetic response to his problems. It is very well done and by far my favorite song on the album. It is also the first video and single. The Roger Miller favorite, "Skip A Rope" is included. As are John Conlee's "Busted" and the Randy Travis hit "On The Other Hand."George isn't out to 'outdo' any of the original recordings, but to sing them to the best of his ability. And that he does very well. It is really nice hearing some old favorites that no longer receive much airplay done by a true living legend. Along with the standards he chose, George also included a standard that he made famous. It is one that was voted all time favorite country song. For the first time in 25 years, he re-recorded "He Stopped Loving Her Today." In his own words, this version is "sung better today than I did originally." This album is destined to become a fast fan favorite and played often. It is a must have for any traditional music lover.
