Guide Review - June Carter Cash - Keep On The Sunny Side, Her Life In Music
A member of the original Carter Family, June Carter Cash was the second of three daughters to Mother Maybelle and Ezra Carter and niece to A.P. and Sarah Carter. She was onstage performing from the time she was ten years old, and this album covers over 60 decades of June's music. There is a very small June singing "Oh! Susannah." She was a genius at writing satirical music and prose and those talents can be heard in "Baby, It's Cold Outside" with Homer and Jethro. One of my personal favorites is her spoken prose, "The Heel." It is very funny. She could also write 'serious' music as well, as proven by the well-known "Ring of Fire."There are some really great songs in this collection. You will find "Keep on the Sunny Side" three times on this album. The first is a version with a small June singing with the original Carter Family. Then, there is the version once June was married to Johnny Cash and he joins the Carter Family singing the song. Finally, the album concludes with the version June recorded for her last solo album, 'Wildwood Flower.' "He's Solid Gone" was another song as sung by the Carter Sisters and Mother Maybelle. "Juke Box Blues" was a single from June's first solo album in 1952.
"Song to John" will bring tears to your eyes. Another tear-jerker is the duet with Johnny Cash, "Far Side Banks of Jordan." It talks about their deep love for each other and if one should die before the other, they will be waiting on the other side for their true love.
