Dierks Bentley - Modern Day Drifter

The Bottom Line

With music similar to that found on his Platinum-selling debut, he follows the adage "Why fix what ain't broke." This one is sure to do as well as his debut, if not even better. The tunes really seem to fit him, even those that he didn't co-write. If you like your country with some rock, and a touch of bluegrass, this album is a perfect choice for your collection.

Guide Review - Dierks Bentley - Modern Day Drifter

"Modern Day Drifter" is the follow up to Dierks' self-titled platinum debut album. The first single, "Lotta Leavin' Left To Do" sits at No. 11 this week, and is certain to break the Top 10. It has a great honky tonk feel to it, and is one of at least four songs that should be singles.

In the title track, we see a picture of a man who goes where he wants, when he wants. In "Cab of My Truck," he talks about how it may not be much to look at, but he's got everything he needs right there inside. In "Settle for a Slowdown," his girl has left him and he's watching her go, just hoping that if she won't stop and turn around, she'll at least step on the brakes and slow down. In "Come a Little Closer," he wants to make everything right again, saying "there ain't nothin' that love can't fix." In "Good Things Happen," he talks about how everything else may not be going right, but as long as he has his girl by his side, "good things happen." In the final track, "Gonna Get There Someday," he talks about how he's on the verge of a commitment, but not quite there yet, but feels he'll get there someday. And as the song progresses, you realize he's speaking this at his mother's grave.

For those fans that loved Dierks' self-titled album, you'll find a lot to love here. Lots of uptempo tunes, and a few great ballads, plus a duet with the Del McCoury Band again, and a track with Alison Krauss singing backup.

Dierks is on his way, and this album is gonna take him all the way to the top.
