Bottom Line:

Grammy nominated Tift Merritt is releasing her third studio album called Another Country. If you've never heard her sweet, soulful voice, you're missing out. She wrote all eleven songs, allowing the world to see her most deepest thoughts. Tift's music crosses so many boundaries that the only way it can be described is great. If you're a fan of the classic folk sound, this album is for you!

Tift Merritt gained fans from all over the world with her sophomore release, Tambourine. Now, four years and a million miles later, she is releasing her latest project Another Country. This definitely has a different sound than any of her previous efforts, but Tift's talent prevailed. After a few extended vacations in Europe, she realized that sometimes you have to go away for a while to truly understand what you have at home. The liner notes to this album tell a story of where the inspiration came from and how it affected her life. The cover of the album has a unique look. It has a classic feel with Tift standing outside, the sky completely blue behind her and the sun shining down on her face. Tift looks so happy and refreshed, so why not let people see that from the minute they look at the album.

The first song off this record is "Something To Me." The first thing that popped into my head was television. Many of the hit television dramas play very light acoustic songs in the background while something major is going on. Well this would be a perfect tune to be played on any hit show. All Tift is singing about are things that are important to her. The music is awesome, very dry and acoustic, but not boring. This is a perfect song that could be played over and over without getting old. It was obvious, if the rest of this record was as good as this tune, Tift had a winning album on her hands.

Another Country has a very hidden story line. I actually had to listen to it a few times just to figure out what she was talking about. The background music is very soft consisting of a piano, acoustic guitar and drums. It's actually a simple love song that talks about different situations. She explains to him that no matter where he goes, she wants to follow.

"Morning Is My Destination" brings on a whole new look in "trying to make it through the night." It's got a catchy beat with a jazz sound. It's not the strongest song off the album, but it's not horrible either, just very repetitive.

"I Know What I'm Looking For Now" is a personal favorite. After spending her life searching for that special someone, trying to fill that void in her life, she finally found him. She also realized that the little things that used matter are really not that important.

"My Heart Is Free" had to have been inspired by her trips to France. It's a story of someone who is getting killed on the beaches of Normandy. He doesn't have to carry the burdens of life anymore. No more worrying or being scared, he's finally free. This was another song that I had to do a double take just to make sure I was hearing it correct. Tift goes so far as describing the trembling hands of the person who does the shooting. Although this may not be the normal sound for Tift Merritt, it's definitely worth being in any collection.
