Bottom Line:Billy Joe Shaver has never pretended to be anyone other than himself. He has taken the characteristics that the world has
come to know and love, and has turned them into a gospel album that is sure win many over. Everybody's Brother is a great album of new gospel songs, and some outstanding duets with artists such as, Marty Stuart, John Anderson, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Tanya Tucker and Bill Miller.
Billy Joe Shaver has done it again. He has turned a gospel album into not just an album, but a statement that you can live
by. Starting off with a rockin' country song, Billy Joe teamed up with John Anderson on "Get Thee Behind Me Satan" and "Jesus Is The Only One Who Loves Us." Now, starting an album out with a duet like this, try to imagine what
great things you're in for. "Rolling Stone" and "When I Get My Wings" are fast paced gospel tunes that also show the strong, "Texas" influence that Billy Joe proudly displays in his music. "Winning Again," with Marty Stuart, is an outstanding song, and has a strong blues, country and rock sound, but also has a great "honky tonk" sound. The two exceptionally talented artists truly shine, singing "hallelujah, I'm winning again." Billy Joe does not miss a beat on the sixth track, he teams up with legendary singer, songwriter Kris Kristofferson on "No Earthly Good."
Billy Joe continues his journey of spiritual emotion with "The Greatest Man Alive." He speaks of regrets and sorrows for the choices he made in his life, and how they impacted the ones he loved most. "The Greatest Man Alive" is a touching song, and even shows the things he hopes will happen for his ex-wife, since he is her "greatest used to be." "Played The Game Too Long" is a duet with Tanya Tucker, and is more of a country tune than anything, describing a married couple who are not happy, and simply stating, "we fooled around and played the game too long." The title track of the album, "Everybody's Brother" is a duet with singer, Bill Miller. Again, this song has a wonderful, uplifting message, and the acoustic sound adds to the song. Billy Joe adds one last touch to this incredible album and that touch is a duet with the late, Johnny Cash. "You Just Can't Beat Jesus Christ" is a great, final touch to the record and combines these two great artists. Billy Joe Shaver shows he is and always will be ]i]Everybody's Brother.
