This CD is an amazing trip down memory lane. Actually, all the CD's in this series offer more than one nostalgic moment. "Opry Gospel" includes stars like Mother Maybelle Carter, Roy Acuff and Sonny James just to name a few. This CD will take you back to the days when it was common for the artists to include a gospel tune or two on their albums.
Taking a Nostalgic Trip Back in Time
The Cracker Barrel restaurants have food as close to home country cooking as you can get without going home to get it. They have my favorite breakfast of all time, Momma's Pancake Breakfast, which I'll actually crawl out bed for. For lunch or dinner one of your choices is the farm raised catfish plate with all the fixin's followed by the fresh fruit cobbler of the day a la mode. You absolutely can't beat the food quality. They also offer an old time country store attached to the restaurants. All the antiques decorating their restaurants and stores are genuine articles carefully chosen to best compliment that particular location. You can find bottles of old fashioned sodas and candy that you would have found in the small country stores of yesteryear. There are gidgets and gadgets, collectibles, books and just about anything else you can think of to keep you interested while you wait for your table. Or you can browse around while you walk off a satisfying meal and do a little shopping. It stands to reason that an establishment this dedicated to the country way of living would also embrace the music. They have started releasing different albums that are exclusive to the Cracker Barrel stores. They are now offering their customers a chance to go back in time and purchase CD's that are digitally remastered select performances of the Grand Ole Opry live from the Ryman Auditorium. They have a series of five albums that are themed selections of performances from the Opry stage.
Legends of the Grand Ole Opry Sing Gospel
From the very start of the Grand Ole Opry, Gospel music has been an integral part of its continuing history. The Ryman Auditorium is often referred to as the Mother Church of Country Music.
This CD is a digitally re-mastered compilation of some of the biggest Opry stars of the mid 60's singing various Gospel songs. You can hear them just as they sounded when they stood on the Opry stage four decades ago. Roy Acuff is known as the King of Country Music
and he sings "I'll Fly Away"
and "That Glory Bound Train."
Mother Maybelle Carter and the Carter Family was a staple on the Opry for many years and they offer three songs on this album. Mother Maybelle sings an AP Carter song, "Meeting in the Air."
June Carter and her sisters sing a song she wrote with Helen, "I Pitched My Tent On The Old Campground."
And Mother Maybelle and the Carter Family sing the traditional arrangement of "I Want to Hear Little David Play."
Sonny James and his Southern Gentlemen sing "Swing Down Sweet Chariot."
The Glaser Brothers sing a favorite of mine, "In The Garden."
There are five more tracks on the album by Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs and The Willis Brothers. With the rich history of artists and song material, it had to be extremely hard narrowing the song choices down to just 12, but they did a phenomenal job. This CD is a great mix of reflective, positive and upbeat and the artists are truly legends. Go out for a meal at your local Cracker Barrel and you just may be listening to one of these great songs while you eat.
