Pam Tillis - Just in Time for Christmas

Stellar Cat Records
Bottom Line:

This is a Christmas album that will make you feel like breaking out the hot chocolate and start on some serious holiday baking. Tillis has a voice like no other and she can draw you into the mood with very little effort.

Pam Tillis may be the daughter of a country legend, but it is her extraordinary voice that has cemented her as a star in her own right. Her voice is like a good aged whiskey, wrapping you in a warm glow of guilt free indulgence. Her new Christmas album is aptly titled Just in Time for Christmas, and is sure to become a fast favorite when listening to Holiday music.

Tillis has managed to record an album with a fantastic blend of several genres, while keeping her country heritage intact. Since Christmas is traditionally a time spent with family and friends, she invited a few people to help make the album even more special by singing along with in front of the fire. Several of her nieces and nephews along with good friends Rudy & Steve Gatlin helped make this a very special project for Tillis. And it wouldn't be a true family affair without her dad, Mel Tillis, also joining her for a song.

This is not your typical Christmas album with the same old songs sung by a different artist. Tillis has truly made everything hers and has blown a breath of fresh air into the holiday spirit. It is well worth picking up for your holiday collection. I don't think anyone will be disappointed whether they are a fan of country music or not. It is simply great music.

The ten tracks on this album are already some of my favorite holiday music in my collection. I've always loved to listen to Tillis, and feel she has a voice that truly has the ability to stand out in a crowd. Out of the ten tracks, three are new songs chosen especially for this album. Some are old favorites that were left very close to the original arrangement so you feel comfort and nostalgia while listening to them. Others were rearranged a little to allow her to share her love of Jazz. Those actually ended up being some of my favorites because her voice is so well suited to that style and it was almost as if her version of those songs was the first time I'd heard them.

"Have Yourself A Merry Lil' Christmas" is a song that has been around for a long time, yet I've never really liked it as well as some others. She added a soft jazzy feel to the song and made it hers. I absolutely love her version.

"Light of the World" is a new song that has the feeling of being something you might have heard from the classic Marty Robbins. With that in mind, she added some Spanish guitar and it is sure to become a quick favorite with fans.

"Beautiful Night" is simply an amazing song that absolutely makes the album. It has a soft and gentle flow around a perfect winter evening with the description of scents and sounds making them alive to the listener.

"The Rockin' Christmas Medley" is a fun song that rearranges the old Brenda Lee favorite a little bit while keeping the mood intact. Tillis is joined by her dad for this one and they have a lot of fun with it.
