Guide Review - Various Artists - The Best Of King And Starday Bluegrass
There's no doubt in my mind that 'The Best of King and Starday Bluegrass' would be the perfect gift for all kinds of bluegrass music lovers. All of the high-class musicians found on this album top notch.Disc one contains 24 songs & starts with J.E. Mainer singing "Big Ball's In Town" and ends with Leon Jackson's "This Heart's Been Broken Before." In between you'll find songs by Jimmy Martin & Bob Osborn ("Blue Eyed Darling" & "My Lonely Heart) as well as Mac O'Dell, Tommy Magness and Shannon Grayson ("Let's Pray," "Little Birdie," "Wings Of Faith"). Disc two has seven different artists (including Ralph Stanley, Reno & Smiley, Bill Duncan) and a total of 26 tunes. "Think Of What You've Done," by The Stanley Brothers is my favorite.
There are 26 songs and 13 artists on the third disc, which has the most variety. You can't help but love the Flat Mountain Boys singing "Choo Choo" and "I Could Love You." Buzz Busby is "Reno Bound" on a "Cold And Win Night" during his two contributions. The Stanley Brothers are also on this disc with two more songs. The fourth and final disc has great music by J.D. Crowe ("You Can Have Her"), Larry Sparks, New Grass Revival ("Norwegian Wood") and Carl Story.
If you want a little bit of history of the bluegrass genre, artists, & record labels these songs were released by, be sure to read the high quality 32 page booklet included in this four disc set. What a wonderful addition to 'The Best of King and Starday Bluegrass' collection.
