Guide Review - Chris Thile - Deceiver
One thing is certain; fans of Chris Thile's work with Nickel Creek's will be surprised when they hear 'Deceiver.' Don't expect this to be a mellow bluegrass album because it has many influences. It might take a few listens to get over the musical direction Chris has taken but you cannot deny the talent this man has. Once you get used to the new sound you'll catch the groove and get into the songs."The Wrong Idea" is something Chris doesn't want his friends to have about what happened between him and a sixteen year old. He says that he hasn't changed into a different person just because he met a pretty girl the night before. For awhile the man forgot who he was in "On Ice" thanks to a kiss that left him breathless. "Waltz For Dewayne Pomeroy" is one of two instrumentals & is the closest thing you'll get to Chris' previous albums. I could listen to Chris' mandolin playing for hours it is so awe inspiring.
"Empire Falls" has a light rock sound to it, while "I'm Nowhere and You're Everything" is slower & talks about where he comes from and then goes into lyrics about a woman that hails from Illinois. I love the last line: "I'm crying 'cause I'm in love with you. You're crying 'cause you have no clue." The second instrumental is called "Jessamyn's Reel" & it picks your mood back up after the rather dark song before. "The Believer" is about judging people who are true believers just to make ourselves (the deceivers) feel better.
