Guide Review - Dolly Parton - Dolly Live and Well
This project was recorded live at Celebrity Theater in Dollywood on December 12th and 13th, 2002. It was a part of Dolly's sold out 'Halos and Horns' tour, which was her first national tour in over 10 years. It has 23 tracks on the two CD's, and there is a wide range of material from real early music to some of her latest releases. She mixes it up fairly well. She opens with "Orange Blossom Special" and takes it into "Train, Train." There are lots of earlier hits she had like "Coat of Many Colors," "Apple Jack" and "Jolene." She does a great version of "Rocky Top" and the band cuts loose a little on that. "Halos and Horns," "Dagger Through The Heart" and "I'm Gone" are all from 'Halos and Horns.' No Dolly show would be complete without "9 to 5," and she has it in there. She has changed the arrangement somewhat to fit a live show, but it brings back memories nonetheless. She chose to include "Islands in the Stream," "Here You Come Again," "Why'd You Come In Here Looking Like That" and "Two Doors Down" in an A Cappella Medley. While these songs are very familiar to the Dolly fan, the arrangement is completely and totally different from the way you are used to hearing them. Her band is called the 'Blueniques' and they join Dolly in harmony for the songs. It is neat, but very different. She closes the show with a terrific cover of "Stairway to Heaven" and a song that is a signature song for Dolly. "I Will Always Love You" is a fitting close to a great show.
