Natural Thing - Ron Williams

Natural Thing - Ron Williams

The Bottom Line

Ron Williams tried to run away from the music industry but fortunately for us, the music stayed in his blood and that resulted in one of the better releases of 2004.

Guide Review - Ron Williams - Natural Thing

From the opening fiddle and drum instrumentals of “Rent Free” I got the feeling that Ron Williams’ CD “Natural Thing” was gonna be one of those records that assimilates itself into my CD player and stays there for quite a while. Then I heard Ron’s voice and I was instantly taken aback. Why is a man with a voice that’s a cross between Merle Haggard and Joe Diffie not on a major Nashville label? I guess they’re still slow to follow the trend back to traditional leaning artists like Ron.

If one were still skeptical about Ron’s country roots they needen’t look any further than his first single, the Merle-esque I’m Tired Of Being Something (That Means Nothing To You). This slow burning ballad really hits me in the gut. The pain and emotion in Ron’s voice is very convincing. “Dangerous” is a fun up tempo track while “Let There Be Light” is the type of twangy fiddle filled ballad that Joe Diffie and Gene Watson have made careers with. Canadian country star Jason McCoy wrote and recorded “A Little Bit Of You” and Ron’s take on the song is as equally good. It’s a Honky Tonker that’s a keeper. The tender ballad “Close Your Eyes And You’ll Miss It” closes out the record with a high note.

When you’re blessed with a voice like Ron’s the only question is how will radio and the commercial market react to someone with the genuine talent to go far. Ron’s CD is perfectly titled for he and his voice are indeed a “Natural Thing.”
