Reckless Kelly - Wicked Twisted Road

Reckless Kelly - Wicked Twisted Road

The Bottom Line

Reckless Kelly plays with roots genres with a good will and a massive talent and it really doesn't matter where you find 'em in the local record store, just so long as you can find 'em and buy 'em. They're good. "Wicked Twisted Road" is just as much fun and just as impossible to define as all of their previous works. Call 'em hillbilly, call 'em hardchargers, call 'em country-rock, just enjoy 'em.
Pros

Guide Review - Reckless Kelly - Wicked Twisted Road

Reckless Kelly is cool. This little independent band comes at us by way of Texas country, but to me they have a sound that I've come to call "Arizona country," which has just a touch of Southwestern flare. I had noticed this when listening to their 1997 album, "Millican," and it was funny to me, since there's a picture inside that disc showing one of the band wearing a University of Arizona t-shirt (my alma mater). In any case, the boys of Reckless Kelly come from everywhere. Their music simply reflects Americana at its best, and they play a lot in Texas, so... While I've seen some people comparing them to the Eagles, to my ear they remind me in some ways of local musician Roger Clyne (the Refreshments).

As awesome as the music on this disc is, I just have a lot of fun reading the liner notes. This is one of the most impressively packaged discs I've seen in ages. It's a grand layout, with a game, lyrics, notes, acknowledgments, and list of things they like (not just what instruments they use). It's as enjoyable to read through as it is to listen to, and there's bonus video footage listed (although I can't seem to make my computer play it; I apparently need technical assistance).

No matter who you think they sound like or where they come from, this disc is an absolute must-listen for any and all Americana fans. You like roots country-rock? This is the band for you. The songs are solid, lyrical, punchy, funny, witty, and real. They're cool. What else d'ya want?
