Southern Rock Country Style - Various Artists

The Bottom Line

Country music and southern rock have always been linked together. It was so natural for a compilation like “Southern Rock Country Style” to be made that it’s a wonder that it took until now to do so. While not strikingly different from the original versions of these timeless songs, the new versions presented here are a tastefully done.
Pros
  • “Heard It In A Love Song” by Mark Chesnutt
  • “Amie” by Brian McComas
  • “Hold On Loosely” by Dusty Drake
Cons
  • Some songs don’t stray much from the original versions.

Description

  • 14 of 16 songs are new recordings.
  • Features artists like Tracy Byrd, Trace Adkins, Mark Wills and newcomer Brad Wolf.
  • Released by Bulletproof Recordings/Rhino/Warner Records.

Guide Review - Various Artists - Southern Rock Country Style

The idea of a group of modern country singers covering classic southern rock is a good one. So good in fact that it’s been done before (with the CMA Album winning “Common Thread: The Songs Of The Eagles”). While that package, conceived of by producer Ralph Sall (who also produced this set), concentrated on one band, “Southern Rock Country Style” goes for the jugular. Sall enlisted 16 artists to record songs from almost as many different southern rock bands.

The best of the 16 tracks here include Billy Currington covering the Georgia Satellites’ “Keep Your Hands To Yorself,” Collin Raye serving up the Outlaw’s “There Goes Another Love Song” Trace Adkins professing to “Know A Little” (one of 2 older recordings) and James Otto rippin’ through “Ramblin Man.” There are a couple of surprises on the CD, namely Mark Chesnutt proving once again that he’s a country singer only. “Heard It In A Love Song” sounds like it was written for Mark and is the most drastically changed track on this record. Anita Cochran gets help from Jason Sellers on “Cant You See.” While Dusty Drake rips through the fun “Hold On Loosely,” Brian McComas takes us back in time with a great rendition of “Amie.”

While this CD probably won’t win any awards (or sell millions of copies), it is a fun one to listen to while also being a nice change of pace for the artists. Fans of any of the artists on the CD should check it out.
