Guide Review - Pete Schlegel Strong Stuff
After spending years as an Ohio State Trooper and EMS Helicopter pilot, Pete Schlegel decided to follow his first love, music. Rather than work while pursuing his musical career, Pete jumped in with both feet and hasn't looked back. With a highly energetic stage show Pete and his band "Tru South" began to make a name for themselves and with that attention soon was paid to Nashville.Written by Bill Anderson and Bobby Tomberlin, "Leavin' Ain't As Easy As It Sounds" is a great introduction into Pete and all that he stands for. "Short For Gone," is the best track on the CD and it finds Pete sounding like a cross between Ronnie Dunn and George Strait, Pete really sells the heartbreak laid out in the song. The Marty Brown/Mark Anderson penned track "Something Strong" reminds me a bit of "I'm From The Country" melodically while the two covers on this record "Swinging Doors" (Merle Haggard) and "Lonesome Orn'ry And Mean" (Waylon Jennings) show that Pete is no studio created vocalist. Rounding out the record is a fun little track written by Paul Overstreet and Tom Hemby: "It Takes A Whole Lot Of Liquor To Like Her." Previously on Hank Williams, Jr.'s "I'm One Of You" CD, "Liquor" is a humorous take on how a man can only love his woman when he's drunk.
While only 9 tracks long, Pete Schlegel's CD really is "Strong Stuff." Especially for a CD that was originally self-released by Pete prior to gaining national distribution via V-Tone/Infinity Records.
