The Bottom Line

Texas is where country music lives and breathes, without corporate ideas of "what sells" or the over-blown Hollywood glitz that's taken over Nashville. It's in Texas you can hear the real deal, the strong, gritty, down-and-dirty country music, and it's here it's presented in all its glory. Ten great Texas-written songs sung by Texas artists who know country music and love it.

  • "Sunday Morning Coming Down"

Guide Review - Various Artists - Ten in Texas

Ten great songs by ten great songwriters performed by ten great artists. What more can you ask for? Here we have impressive names like Joe Ely, Asleep at the Wheel, Dale Watson, and Willie Nelson; we have songs written by Billy Joe Shaver, Kris Kristofferson, Ernest Tubb, Guy Clark, and Buddy Holly.

The songs are all familiar. Many of them were big hits over the years, such as "The Grand Tour," which remains a George Jones standard, performed here by Texas Troubadour Dale Watson; Ernest Tubb's swinging "There's a Little Bit of Everything in Texas," done here by the classically Texan duo of Johnny Bush and Cornell Hurd; Joe Ely beautifully performs "Sunday Morning Coming Down," which of course was a monumental hit for Johnny Cash; and Gary P. Nunn brings back Red Steagall's "Lone Star Beer and Bob Wills Music."

About the only thing that draws me short is a very odd live rendition of "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys" from Willie Nelson. Maybe he's just performed it so often he likes to mix it up a little, but I didn't care for this version. Otherwise, this is Texas music at its best. A great taste of what Texas music is all about, and, frankly, an awesome disc for a little swing dancing.
