Guide Review - Billy Joe Shaver - The Real Deal
Billy Joe Shaver's "Live Forever" first came to light ten years ago on the third disc from the Highwaymen, "The Road Goes On Forever" (recently re-issued in a 10th anniversary limited edition). It was again recorded earlier this year for the live tribute to Billy Joe, and it's featured as the lead-off on this disc, as true now as it ever was. Billy Joe Shaver is indeed destined to live forever, because his music is so magnificent. One kind of strange thing to see of all things in the world on this disc is the presence of Big & Rich, singing with Billy Joe on "Live Forever" and producing the track. Trepidations aside, I have to admit when they actually put their minds to it, the boys can sing. Good to see they have such an excellent influence, and I hope Billy Joe rubs off on them some. Also appearing with Billy Joe on this disc are Nanci Griffith and Kimmie Rhodes, both presenting lovely duets. Kevin Fowler appears on the humorous track, "Slim Chance and the Can't Hardly Playboys."
Shaver's voice is unique. His distinctive approach to a tune lends a firm authenticity to his singing, and of course he's singing such good songs the words take on added authority. Shaver sings like a songwriter, but as wonderful as it is hearing his songs sung by others, it's a delight hearing him present them himself, straight from that honest, down-to-earth heart. He's gotten past his troubles, he'll try and try again, and he will live forever.
