Guide Review - Various Artists - Touch My Heart: A Tribute to Johnny Paycheck
In 2003 we lost Johnny Paycheck at age 64, but his memory will live forever in the music he left behind. While he recorded over 70 albums and had a little over two-dozen number one hits, he is probably most remembered for one song in particular. "Take This Job and Shove It" is still played today as a dedication to a few select employers from their employees.George Jones sings "She's All I Got." Gail Davies & Robbie Fulks team up for "Shakin' The Blues." One of my favorites was by Nekko Case. She sang, "If I'm Gonna Sink (I Might As Well Go To The Bottom)." Hank Williams III does his version of "I'm the Only Hell My Mama Ever Raised," and he has slowed down the tempo quite a bit. Hank III sounds a whole lot like his grand-daddy. I also liked Billy Yates' version of "The Lovin' Machine." I haven't heard this song for a long time, and he did a great job.
There are a total of 16 tracks on the album, and of course one of them is "Take This Job and Shove it." Bobby Bare, Radney Foster, Buck Owens and Jeff Tweedy teamed up for this rousing version. It is a terrific album, and one that will bring many memories back from a fading era of great music. Another great release from Sugar Hill Records.
