Guide Review - Trick Pony - R.I.D.E.
The third album by Trick Pony is a confirmation that this talented group is here to stay. All three members of the trio, Keith, Ira and Heidi, are well versed in all aspects of their chosen career. Each is an accomplished singer and songwriter and they switch roles of singing lead in different songs with ease. Their current single is a cover of "It's a Heartache." They have some fun songs on there that Heidi takes the lyrics and runs with them. "The Bride" is her thankfulness that someone else has him, and she thanks God she is NOT the bride. For "I Didn't" she is having fun with the fact that the problem with her dissolved relationship is religion based. He thought he was God, and she didn't. It is a fun song. "Sad City" is Keith's brainchild and one he originally co-wrote with Heidi in mind for vocal lead. But his demo blew away the powers that be and he rewrote it with more of a male viewpoint. It is a haunting song, and one of my album favorites. "Maryann's Song" is part spoken and part soft background vocals from Heidi. It is a tearjerker about losing a loved one. "Hillbilly Rich" brings all three of them together in the honky tonk sound they do so well. This album has good honky tonk country music, with some ballads thrown in for good measure. George Jones made a couple of comments here and there on the album, but I couldn't pick him out actually singing on anything. I'm not sure what that was all about, but it is an excellent album and worth getting.
