Guide Review - Earl Scruggs & Guests - I Saw the Light
This album is a lot of fun to listen to. It combines the bluegrass sound with some of the contemporary sounds of the late sixties and early seventies. One of the things that generated the separation of Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs was their views on music. Lester was very traditional and didn't want to veer from the high, lonesome sound they were known for. Earl wanted to venture a little more into the contemporary so they parted ways. Earl formed The Earl Scruggs Revue with his sons Randy and Gary along with Dobro player Josh Graves the core members of the Revue. Along with their original and classic bluegrass tunes, they also included songs from the contemporary folk and rock performers of the time. It was a very daring move, and pretty much unheard of at the time. Their gamble paid off, and they attracted new fans in droves. This CD is a sampling of that era. Some guests on the album are Linda Ronstadt, Tracy Nelson, Arlo Guthrie and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. They join Earl for such songs as "Silver Wings," "It's a Picture From Life's Other Side," "Never Ending Song of Love" and "I Saw The Light." I think the names and songs pretty much speak for themselves. This album is packed with talent from several musical genres and the harmonies are outstanding. I would highly recommend this album for anyone's musical collection. You won't be disappointed.
