Guide Review - Dale Watson - Whiskey or God
Hank Williams III called Dale Watson "the Savior of Country Music." I still remember I bought one of CDs on the recommendation of a friend and I was hooked on him within the first bar of the first track on that disc. There hasn't been a thing I've heard from Dale Watson since that I haven't loved. This new disc is no exception.Dale Watson's commanding baritone takes charge right from the beginning, with the two-stepping "Sit and Drink and Cry," a perfect honky- tonking dance tune, a little tear in the beer song of the sort Dale Watson excels at, along with the title track, "Whiskey or God," "Tequila and Teardrops," and the very painful and touching "I Wish I Was Crazy Again." Nobody sings country pain like Dale Watson. But he knows how to have a little fun, too, with his tongue-in-cheek salute to the truck driver in drag, "Truckin' Queen (I Got My Night Gown On)," to the gorgeous gal in at the bar in 38.21.34, and to everyone's grumpy next-door neighbor in the closer, "Heeah!"
I can't deny I'm more than a little biased in favor of Dale Watson, so I was bound to like this disc. But he really is that good. When you like country music, REAL country music, then it's impossible not to like Watson's music. If you ever meet him, it's impossible not to like him personally. He's a powerhouse bundle of talent, a great country music singer, terrific guitar picker, and an honest-to-goodness real guy, a true gentleman. Have a little fun, a little tequila, and listen to a little Dale.
