Thankfully, Mark not only met the quality of Chris' act but surpassed it with his great brand of Honky Tonk music. He opened up with a solo acoustic rendition of "Honky Tonk Heroes" the seminal Billy Joe Shaver song that never gets old. Mark then broke into the "title track" of his newest record, "Savin' The Honky Tonk." From there Mark brought us back to the early 1990's with his hits "Bubba Shot The Jukebox," "Too Cold At Home," "Old Flames Have New Names" and "Country Comes To Town." He then continued the hit parade with his classic hits "I Just Wanted You To Know," "Brother Jukebox" and my favorite song that he's ever done: "Going Through The Big D." An unknown Roger Miller song came next. Classically styled the honky tonker "You Can't Do Me This Way" sounds like it was written for mark, the funny thing is that the song was written in the 1960s. By this time Mark was well into his groove, no doubt aided by the beer coming from his red solo cup (no "sissy" water for this singer).

Next came a blues song ("Little Little Loverboy") and a medley of some Waylon Jennings classics "Sing The Blues/I Don't Think Hank Done It This Way/Good Hearted Woman and segued into Willie's "Whiskey River." Next came the fun "Blame It On Texas" and a hit from Mark's Greatest Hits album, the self-penned "A Little To Late." "Big Mama" came next followed by the medley of "Gonna Get A Life/Do You Feel Alright. After a short break mark and his band came back to sing two songs written by Kevin Fowler and the cornerstones of "Savin' The Honky Tonk" the fun "Beer Bait And Ammo" and "The Lord Loves The Drinkin' Man" Both songs are classic honky tonk songs that are pure, unadulterated country music.

With 22 songs performed, Mark Chesnutt certainly gave the fans their money's worth. When you add that this show was a benefit concert (at Tacoma Washington's "Tacoma Dome." for firefighters in the northwest, then it all adds up to a great night of music for a great cause. The next time Mark Chesnutt rolls into my town, I will certainly make a point to see his show. Fans of pure, hardcore country music will certainly be in for a good time when attending a show put on by Mark Chesnutt.
