The second annual Beam Bash was held Friday, February 13 at Bruce Rossmeyer's Destination Daytona. Once again, Montgomery Gentry and NASCAR driver Robby Gordon teamed up with Jim Beam to celebrate the beginning of the NASCAR race season while supporting our troops. A portion of each ticket sold went to support Operation Homefront Florida Chapter.

For those with VIP tickets to the event, they not only had the opportunity to help a great cause, but were able to enjoy a little extra fun in the mix. There was an open buffet of great southern BBQ and an open bar filled with Jim Beam products in the VIP tent. Racing fans had a chance to get up close and personal with Robby Gordon, the driver of the No. 7 Jim Beam Toyota Camry. They also had a chance to meet seventh-generation distiller and bourbon ambassador for Jim Beam, Fred Noe. Before the show, Eddie Montgomery and Troy Gentry were in the tent for those who wanted to meet them and have photos taken.

Last year, over $18,000 was raised for Operation Homefront. The goal for this year was $25,000. I stopped by the Operation Homefront tent to learn a little more about the organization. Chad Ragland, Board Chairman for Operation Homefront Florida Chapter, talked a little bit with me about some of the things that this great organization tries to do for our service men and women.

I was especially impressed at the commitment level that is given to the entire family of those who serve. They help all branches of the armed services and are geared more towards support for the enlisted troops. They often don't have the resources to deal with issues that may happen at home with their families while they are stuck overseas. The program offers financial assistance to help with emergencies such as illness, homelessness and death. They offer programs where families can be 'adopted' for Thanksgiving/holiday baskets and things such as school supplies. There is emergency aid for vehicle donation and repair, baby care items and food. Computer programs connect families with their loved one stationed so far away. There is a moving program offering physical labor for families who have someone being deployed. And this is all accomplished on a volunteer basis.

In addition to all of the above, there are two locations of Operation Homefront Village for Wounded Warriors in the US. They offer two and three bedroom apartments rent free to families who qualify while they get back on their feet. There is a village located near Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, and one near Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C.
