There was a cute video shown on the screen before Tim came out. It was set up like a documentary/movie trailer with Barbie dolls as the characters. There was a dramatized version of Faith's life, followed by a dramatized version of Tim's life, and then a spoof of how the two met and how the Soul 2 Soul tour was created. It was pretty funny and a nice distraction while we waited for the show to start up again.
I was expecting just Tim, but the two of them came out to sing a couple of songs, "Angry All the Time" and "Like We Never Loved At All." They sat facing each other at center stage but they were shadowed behind two veiled curtains that hung down from above. It looked pretty silly from where we were sitting, but I talked to others who had seats up in the risers and I guess the effect was actually pretty neat. I was told that it looked very soft and romantic.
Faith exited the stage and the curtains were removed, then it was the moment I had been waiting for... Tim's set!!! He started out with a cover of "The Joker" originally done by the Steve Miller Band. I love hearing him sing this song because he puts a little country twang on it that just cracks me up!
Tim worked the stage, reaching out and shaking fans hands whenever he could. He was handed several bouquets of flowers and would take each one while balancing the microphone in the crook of his elbow, and continuing to sing. Talk about multi-tasking!
There was one funny moment when all we could hear on our side of the stage was women screaming. I turned to my friend and neither one of us knew what the heck was going on... until Tim came into view. He had got rid of the shirt he had on and replaced it with a tight fitting black tank top. Enough said!
I do have one complaint, unfortunately Tim didn't talk to the audience much either. He made a comment about how everyone was there to hear music so they were just going to give it to us. But oddly enough, it didn't bother me as much that he didn't converse with the audience. Perhaps there were just way too many Timmy songs I wanted to hear and I was content as he belted out one of my favorites after another such as "She's My Kind of Rain," "Real Good Man," and "Between the River and Me." I was thrilled when he sang "Between the River and Me," as it's my favorite track from his latest album Let it Go.
At one point, Tim came down off the stage and into the area between the front row seats and the stage, where the photographers and camera men stood. He walked around the entire stage and shook hands and gave quick hugs. It was a wonderful gesture and really showed that Tim does care about getting closer to his fans, if just for a brief moment.
Tim ended his set with the touching ballad "If You're Reading This" which he sang on the Academy of Country Music Awards back in May. I don't believe this song is available on any of Tim's albums. I just checked iTunes and I couldn't find it there either. Hopefully it will be available sometime soon as a single because it's definitely one worth adding to the collection.
Just when you though the night was over, Faith came back on stage to sing a few more duets. I think perhaps the cutest moment of the night was when they sang "It's Your Love." There was lots of gazing and touching and the song ended with Faith in Tim's arms and the both of them looking absolutely content. It was the perfect Soul 2 Soul moment!
As I mentioned at the beginning, the tickets might be expensive but you do get a lot for what you pay. I think the show ended up almost 3 hours long! In my opinion, Tim steals the show. I'm sure some would disagree, but I also know a lot of people would support that opinion too.
I would like to actually go and see the show again, but sit up higher so I can see the top of the stage. I heard there were some pretty cool effects with the lighting on the top of the stage, which we couldn't see from our seats. I likely won't make it to another Soul 2 Soul show this year, but I'll be sure to catch them the next time they swing through Ontario.
