Country Music Single Releases - Week of March 17, 2008

What's new on country radio?

From Jennifer Webb, About.com Guest

Toby Keith - "She's A Hottie"
Whenever I see a song title like this from Toby, I assume it will be humorous. Much to my surprise, after listening to "She's A Hottie," I found out it's just a straight-up song paying tribute to a girl with a bit of a naughty streak. Listen

Garth Brooks - "Midnight Sun"
Now this is the kind of song I've been waiting for Garth to release. At first the tempo is slow, but it's the type where you know there's some good honky tonkin' on the way. It reminds me of vintage Garth with all the fiddles and twang in the vocals.

Tim McGraw - "Kristofferson"
It's been a while since I've been really impressed by a Tim McGraw single, but I must say that "Kristofferson" is a cool song and is as country sounding as I've heard from him lately. If I had my way, this would be the kind of music Tim releases each and every time.

Jennifer Hanson - "'73"
Jennifer Hanson has a unique gift for songwriting, as proven in "'73." As the woman goes through photographs, she wonders what life would have been like if her parents had remained together. It's not a bitter song, but more of a reflective look back at the past. Listen

Dolly Parton - "Jesus & Gravity"
Dolly Parton is a legend in every sense of the word, but when she sings a song that's full of inspiration you can feel the heart and soul she puts in it. She knows she hasn't arrived at this point in her life by having "dumb luck," Jesus is there to lift her up and gravity keeps her grounded.

Julio Iglesias Jr. - "The Way I Want You"
"The Way I Want You" is the song that helped Julio Iglesias Jr. win CMT's "Gone Country" television competition. At first I didn't know what to think, but as I listen to the single more and more it's growing on me. I'll be interested in seeing what kind of response it gets from country fans. Listen

Crystal Shawanda - "You Can Let Go"
"You Can Let Go" is a good song, but the ending could put a tear in your eye. From a sweet little girl telling her Daddy he could let go and let her ride her bike, to a young woman telling him it's okay for him to give her away at her wedding, in the end she lets him know it's okay to pass away because she will be strong enough to live her life without him. Mark Alan Thompson - "Perfume And Gasoline"
From the short clip I heard, this sounds like a good song about a man who gets hooked by a sweet girl. It's mid-tempo and Mark's voice is unique enough to stand out if given a chance on radio.
