Bottom Line:

If you want to see Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs while they were in their prime, then this DVD release is for you. With a total of twenty eight songs, you are sure to get your money's worth.

It still amazes me how interesting and relevant these performances are even after all these years. I wasn't around back in the sixties but thanks to this DVD I can visit that time period. A time period where Flatt & Scruggs were in their prime making new music and playing their hits.

July 1961 Show: Earl Scruggs plays the first song, "Fire Ball Mail," showing off his amazing banjo playing ability. I love Lester Flatt's voice, especially on "I Won't Be Hanging Around," as well as the dobro & fiddle solos. The first commercial is for Martha White Corncakes & then the boys get the music started again with "We'll Meet Again Sweetheart." Earl Scruggs & Jake Tullock join in on background vocals. Another song with great background vocals is "Are You Washed In The Blood." The second commercial is then played & gives the recipe for Martha White Cinnamon Raisin Loaf Bread. "Foggy Mountain Special" is then played & everybody gets in on it with Scruggs on banjo, Paul Warren on fiddle, Lester Flatt on guitar, Curly Seckler on mandolin, Jake Tullock on string bass, & Josh Graves on dobro. As a change from the "usual," Josh Graves sings lead & Jake Tullock sings harmony on "You Live In A World All Your Own." Jake & Josh then tell a joke before Lester comes back to sing "Go Home," my favorite from this episode. It really is a stand-out performance. "Polka On A Banjo" picks up the speed as does the last track, "Dance All Night With A Bottle In My Hand."

August 1961 Show: The classic tune "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" is this episode's opening tune. Earl Scruggs really gets with it as he plays his banjo. I love watching him play because you can really tell he is a talented man. This episode has a special guest and it is none other than Maybelle Carter. She sings "Wildwood Flower" with Earl on rhythm guitar. Martha White's Biscuits are the focus of the first commercial. The upbeat "Have You Come To Say Goodbye" is next up, before the boys go into the instrumental "Durham's Bull." The Foggy Mountain Quartet gathers around the microphone to sing and play their hearts out on a gospel song, "I Dreamed About Mama Last Night" and then Lester tosses over to a commercial for Martha White Cornbread. "Homestead On The Farm" is a great performance with a main focus on Lester's vocals and Maybelle Carter on the autoharp. Josh Graves and Jake Tullock sing "Down, Down, Down" before going into their quick comedy routine. Maybelle Carter comes back to perform "The Liberty Dance," which is a beautiful sounding instrumental. The last song is "Over There."

This was a wonderful addition in the Flatt & Scruggs DVD series and if you have the first one then you really need to have the second one. They really are two "must haves" for any bluegrass fan.
