Country music has always had a strong foundation due to its artist and fans alike. No one has ever denied, although many critics have questioned, the world's love and relationship with this musical force. It has been known as hillbilly music, mountain music, and music for the common people. Everyone can identify with the words, lyrics, and the artists because many of us come from the same places and have dealt with the same issues. Gene Watson has sang about it all, which makes understandable why he is a country music legend.
Gene Watson has played in every bar and honky tonk throughout the United States and even the world. One thing he has always done was remain close to his country roots and his fans. Simply a common man singing about everyday experiences has helped boost his career to superstardom since the 1970's. Gene has been known as the "Voice of Country Music" due to his crying voice and how he can capture the world with one of his authentic songs. Born In Palestine, Texas on October 11, 1943, Gene lived a pretty normal life and ended up becoming an auto mechanic. By the 1970's he was playing in Houston, working clubs by night and an auto body shop by day. Gene worked like this for a while and started to record on some smaller record labels in the area. In 1974, Capitol Records picked up a tune that Gene had recorded, and decided to release it as nationally. "Love In The Hot Afternoon" would become Gene's first big hit and eventually go all the to Billboard's number three slot. Gene's national success lasted for the next two decades where he recorded several hits such as "Paper Rosie," "Farewell Party," and "Nothing Sure Looked Good On You." Although, country music was changing at a fast pace due to the "outlaw movement" and the general styles were fading out, Gene managed to find his place and has remained there since.
After being on Capitol Records for a number of years, Gene left and moved on to MCA Records in 1982. This is where he gained his big hit "Fourteen Carat Mind." Although he only had one big hit on this label, he did have some success with "Got No Reason Now For Going Home." By the mid-1980's, he was recording for Epic Records where he recorded his biggest hit to date "Memories To Burn."
Gene continues to tour numerous dates a year and remains a fan favorite where ever he goes. Still recording new music, Gene is a legend that really creates a quality sound. His fans stretch all over the world and even his web site is based out of Ireland. One thing that Gene always acknowledges is the world's longest running, live radio show, the Grand Ole Opry. Although he is not a member, Gene performs regularly to keep in touch with his county heritage. Anytime you see this awesome performer live, you see his remarkable stage presence and why he has become one of country's most notable entertainers. Gene's next project is recording with numerous other country legends for the latest Country Music Homecoming. This is a project that has taken place in the past where the stars gather together and swap stories, sing songs and simply visit for hours. This surly will result into a remarkable collection that everyone can enjoy. Considering Gene Watson has been going strong for almost forty years, it should be safe to say he will be around for a lot longer.
