Maybelle and The Carter Family:

Maybelle Carter was one third of the First Family of Country Music, The Carter Family. She was affectionately known as "Mother" Maybelle. She was born Maybelle Addington in Nickelsville, VA on May 10, 1909. She was related by marriage to A.P. and Sara Carter, being married to A.P.'s brother Ezra.

Maybelle played guitar, banjo and autoharp. She actually was credited for creating what is known as the "Carter scratch" flatpicking style of guitar playing. She would use her thumb to play the melody on the bass and middle strings, and her index finger to fill out the rhythm.

After the Carter Family:

After the Carter Family split up as an act, Maybelle went on the road with daughters Helen, June and Anita. She also released several solo works, and was prominently featured on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Will the Circle Be Unbroken CD.

Maybelle Carter passed away on October 23, 1978.
