Anne Murray has become one of the classiest ladies in country music, as well as a living legend. On June 20, 1945 in Springhill, Nova Scotia, Morna Anne Murray was born. Her father was a doctor and her mother was a registered nurse, who eventually became a homemaker.
Growing up, she had five brothers and everyone in the family sang around the house. Anne grew up in the rock and roll era, but she loved a wide variety of music. Being a fan of all genres helped expand her knowledge, and her respect for music. After six years of piano lessons, she began taking classical voice lessons. Anne would travel two hours every Saturday morning for her lessons, but in the end, it all paid off.
Once she graduated, Anne went off to college where she studied in Physical Education, but her love for music still burned inside of her. Her friends were able to persuade her to audition for a television show called "Singalong Jubilee." At this point in her life she did not get the job. However, two years later she got a phone call requesting her to come and audition again. This was the break she needed.
After landing the spot on the "Jubilee" for the summer, she started teaching. She then got a spot on another television show "Let's Go." Anne released an album with a small Canadian company called Arc Labels in 1968. In 1969, she signed with Capitol Records and had her first big hit with "Snowbird." This tune was one of the most played songs in North America and it made Anne Murray a star. Anne eventually became a regular on the hit television show "The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour." All of this national attention boosted her popularity even higher. She appeared on numerous shows including "The Bobby Vinton Show," "American Bandstand, and "Christmas With Friends From Sesame Street." The world had simply fallen in love with Anne, and her demand was greater than ever.
Between 1970 and 1988, Anne recorded twenty four studio albums including the award-winning children's album There's A Hippo In My Tub. The awards she has won would fill up a house. She has won four Grammy's, three Country Music Association Awards, three American Music Awards, and is in the Canadian Country Music Hall Of Fame as well as the Juno Hall Of Fame.
On January 15th, 2008, Anne released her latest project Anne Murray Duets: Friends & Legends. This is a collection of most of her hits, and it spans her entire career. However, she had to throw in a twist. This wasn't going to be your average, run of the mill, greatest hits package. Anne went into the studio with some of her most famous friends and re-recorded her classics. Stars like Martina McBride and Celine Dion helped make this album so special.
Anne Murray has proven she is still a strong force in country music. Hopefully one day she will add being inducted as a member of the Country Music Hall Of Fame to her long list of accomplishments. She sounds better today than she did when she started. There is no denying she is country's "Songbird."
