The next finalist to sing tonight is Matt Mason.
In his pre-recorded spot, he talks with Chris and Aimee.
"This week I'm doing an original song called "Maybe I'm talking foolish." (He sings some of the song) Chris: Most big songs are usually real things, real emotions. That's what totally stuck me about your song. It really did have that feel. Aimee: Your voice. It just feels warm and fuzzy. I love it. Like brandy. Chris: I mean, I can imagine you writing that to sing to a girl. It would be perfect. Matt: That's what I did. Chris: For a specific purpose. You know what I mean? Matt: Exactly. Chris: But that relates better than almost anything. Matt: Yeah. I sit down and said, 'I'm gonna write a song to see if I can win her over.' And I did. Chris: It usually works."
Matt's song is "Maybe I'm Talking Foolish"
Phil: I think you can tell there's a real emotion in what you do. And, I think you're that kind of writer. And it's a really good song. I think... it was hard for me to differentiate between the verse and the chorus. I think it's good stuff.
David: I liked your voice a lot. I thought the song was boring. Sorry. I really did. And I can be pretty harsh. I told Pavarotti once that he sung out of tune. So, you gotta think, you know, not to take everything I say so seriously.
Anastasia: I actually do agree with David, but you know you're one of my favorites, and I see a little bit of Gary Allan and a little bit of Chris Isaak in you. And you have a sexuality, but you're not trying to be sexy, and I like that. But, really, next week. If you want to stay on this show, and I really want you to, please be careful about your song selection.
Matt: Will do.
Wynonna: He's very intense. He's intense, but he likes writing songs about women. Don't you Matt?
Matt: Yes I do.
Wynonna: And why is that?
Matt: I don't know. I could write a song about you.
Wynonna: And what would the words be... like?
Matt: Like, 'I love you, but you don't love me back.'
Wynonna: Ok... Matt Mason, everybody.
My thoughts: Matt has always been one of my favorites, and while I'm a ballad person, this song kind of drags for me. It wasn't very exciting. Not his worst performance, but definitely not his best, either.
