License to Chill - Jimmy Buffett

License to Chill - Jimmy Buffett

The Bottom Line

“License To Chill” is the perfect summertime party companion. It fits snugly between Alan Jackson and Kenny Chesney. Jimmy Buffett’s “first” country CD will please both Parrotheads and his “new” country audience.

Guide Review - Jimmy Buffett - License to Chill

While never completely a country artist, Jimmy Buffett’s always “had it in him.” Therefore, he always had some country songs on his CDs. He’s just never released a complete country record until “License To Chill.” Produced by hit country writer/singer Mac McAnally and Michael Utley, the CD features 16 of Buffett’s trademark breezy island songs, 9 of them featuring guests.

Leading off the record is the star studded hit single “Hey Good Lookin’.” Featuring Clint Black, Alan Jackson, Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith and George Strait, “Lookin’” is a remake of the classic Hank Williams song. Each star sings separate lines in the verses and chorus of the song. “Boats To Build” picks up right where Alan Jackson and Jimmy left off with “It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere.” While all of the duets could’ve come off sounding contrived or hollow, they really stand out, particularly “Sea Of Heartbreak” with George Strait and “Conky Tonkin’” with Clint Black. While the duets are great Jimmy really shines on his solo stuff like “Coast Of Carolina” “Window On The World,” “Anything Anytime Anywhere” and “Back To The Island.”

If you are a Parrothead then chances are good that you’ll find something different on here to like. If you’re a fan of any of the artists who make guest appearances on the CD, you should enjoy “License To Chill” as well. If you’re just an average country fan intrigued by the guest list, you should equally enjoy this fine example of a summertime party record.
