Adobe Trailer Motel - Matt Lindahl

The Bottom Line

This quirky, fresh, completely original individual is probably too "way out" for most folks; still, that he got as far as he did in the Nashville Star competition says that, maybe, there's a lot more people out here who want quirky and fresh than the suits would have one think.

Pros

  • Grandpa's Song
  • I Woke Up
  • Get Out Of My Head

Cons

  • It's too short!

Description

  • Raw, acoustic blend of tight music, sharp writing, and biting humor.
  • Debut album from a singer who is nothing more than himself and pleased to be so.
  • Real country music and a wicked sense of humor.

Guide Review - Adobe Trailer Motel - Matt Lindahl

Matt Lindahl may not be the Nashville Star, but he is star material--the sort of star that may never supernova, but will shine for decades. I didn't watch a lot of this year's "Nashville Star" because I was rather disappointed in the show's emphasis on looks. But I did catch a couple of late episodes, and it took less than a second for me to fall head-over-heels for Matt Lindahl. A unique personality, with a good voice and great songs. I was floored he was actually still in the competition. For the first time, I cast a vote (or two). He didn't win, but so what? We know his name now. He's on his way.

His first disc, a blend of lovely songs and goofy humor, is as country as they come. With a guitar, a banjo, and a harmonica, Matt's clever lyrics and smooth vocals are put on display to shine. Melodies like "Grandpa's Song," with the refrain "It's not good, it's not bad, it's just different, and you can't live a life of yesterday" are heart-wrenching. He speaks nostalgically in "Grandma's Gravy"; of love coupled with a sense of futility with "I Woke Up." Then he'll throw a curve with hilarious send-ups of radio commercials ("Bob's Flakes" and "Disco Burger") or the riotous "Irish Father."

I sensed when hearing these things a kindred spirit in Matt, someone else who has, perhaps, listened to a lot of Firesign Theatre or is a fan of "Elephant Parts." Matt Lindahl may not appeal to everyone, but I think he's just unique enough to be with us for a long, long time.
