The Wrights - Down This Road

The Wrights - Down This Road

1. “Down This Road” - Shannon Wright
I wrote this song before Adam and I got married, when I was in Atlanta. It’s about being burned -being burned so many times that it doesn’t hurt anymore. It’s a pretty rockin’ song, but still a sad song. It’s a ‘You’ve been through it before, one more time won’t hurt’ kind of thing.

2. “Hard Time” - Adam Wright
(Adam) I wrote it from the point of view of a parent to an unruly child, a kid gone wild. But Shannon’s heard it a million times and she never got that from it, so I guess it’s not that obvious!
( Shannon) Well, I just thought you could relate it to anybody; anybody that’s kind of gone down the wrong path.
(Adam) It's a ‘You’re just making things hard on yourself’ song.

3. “Knew All Along” - Adam & Shannon Wright
( Shannon) Adam started this song. It’s about losing somebody you love and trying to make sense out of it. I got to help Adam finish it, and, shortly after we wrote it we lost two people who were really close to us. So this song took on a special meaning.
(Adam) Yeah, it got really heavy. This song came to light after we wrote it.

4. “On The Rocks” - Adam Wright
Shannon had this kind of joking thing—well, I thought she was joking anyway!—where she’d say “We’re on the rocks. We just got married and we’re already on the rocks.” It was pretty funny and I thought it’d make a cool title for a song. So one morning she was mad, saying that again, and I just threw it together for her. Made her laugh. 5. “Hole In My Pocket” - Adam Wright
It’s a work song. I’ve had enough of those dead-end, crappy jobs to know what it’s like to be working too hard for not enough money. I was still in Atlanta doing electrical work when I wrote this one.

6. “Butterflies” - Shannon & Adam Wright
( Shannon) It’s about holding out for true love. I did it from a girl’s point of view: letting go of somebody who she knew wasn’t the one; it’s about holding out for magic. It’s hopeful.
(Adam) We co-wrote this one. Shannon had the chorus and I stormed in the house and said ‘What is that? Let’s do some verses, work on it.’

7. “You’re In Georgia Now” - Adam Wright
We were still living in Atlanta when I wrote it. It was right before we moved, and, well, we’re just nuts about Georgia. I mean, I love Tennessee, but I’d never lived anywhere else. There are so many great things about Georgia, and probably too many great songs about it. But I just wanted to try and write one. It just had the right feel: slow and easy and smooth.

8. “Roller Coaster” - Shannon & Adam Wright
( Shannon) [Laughs] It's a song about love; about the ups and downs of love, I guess.
(Adam) This was Shannon’s tune originally.
( Shannon). Yeah, originally I sang it. But we thought it’d be more fun as a duet, if Adam came in and took the second verse.

9. “Do You Love Me” - Adam Wright
The sentiment is kind of simple: you’re wondering if you’re doing everything that you need to do to make a person happy. And, it’s just got a little groove to it.

10. “Leave A Light On” (Special Guest Vocals by Alan Jackson) - Adam Wright
I wrote it as a sort of gospel or spiritual thing, with that message. But it’s not real specific. So I’m not sure if people get it that way or not. I think some people do and some don’t, you know? Alan liked it because it sounded so country. He asked if he could sing on it and we said, “Well, yeah!” [both laugh] He makes me sound like a chump when he comes in!

11. “Waiting On Something Good” - Shannon Wright
When I wrote this song I can remember I was feeling a little down and that line just made me feel better. It’s mainly a song about patience. You know, ‘Good things come...’”

12. “You Got The Thorns”- Adam Wright
(Adam) The hook just kind of came around at first. It’s like that old Jerry Reed song “She Got the Gold Mine, I Got the Shaft.” [both laugh] It’s that kind of hook—and I’m a sucker for it. I thought it would be funny saying ‘We’re still in love, but I got the better end of the deal than you did.’
( Shannon) I wanted to sing that part so bad, you know, it was also my way into the song. But now that I did I look like a snot! [laughs]
(Adam) Yeah, I wrote it and I’d sing the whole thing...now people sometimes come up to her after the shows and say ‘You know it’s really ugly what you’re saying about him!’ [laughs]
