Nathan Rabin of The A.V. Club called The Legendary Lefty Frizzell a "masterpiece from a great songwriter forthrightly facing down his own mortality and a lifetime of dissolution and regret." Lefty Frizzell recorded this album when he wasn't in good shape. The standout track is "I Never Go Around Mirrors (I've Got a Heartache to Hide)."
