"When the devil finished, Johnny said: 'Well you're pretty good ol' son. But if you'll sit down in that chair, right there, and let me show you how its done.'"

9. "Digging Up Bones" - Randy Travis

7. "Ghost Riders in the Sky" - Johnny Cash

This song has an interesting storyline. The cowboy is riding out on a dark and windy day when he witnesses a herd of red-eyed cows thundering through the sky. Following the cattle are riders, who try to round them up, but never can quite reach them. This is their fate: to ride forever chasing the devil's herd across the skies. One rider warns the cowboy that if he doesn't change his ways, this too will be his fate.

Lyrics:

"If you want to save your soul from Hell a-riding on our range. Then cowboy change your ways today or with us you will ride. Trying to catch the Devil's herd, across these endless skies."

6. "Midnight In Montgomery" - Alan Jackson

Alan Jackson - The Greatest Hits Collection
Arista Nashville

5. "Phantom 309" - Red Sovine

Red Sovine - Greatest Hits
Varese Sarabande

A man is hitchhiking and gets picked up by a trucker who says his name is "Big Joe." They drive through the night and Big Joe lets the man off at a truck stop, giving him a dime to buy a cup of coffee on him. When the man goes in and orders his coffee, saying that it's on Big Joe, he learns the story that happened about ten years ago: "Big Joe," avoiding a bus full of children stranded on the highway, turned his wheel so he wouldn't kill them all and in the process was killed himself.

"Well, Joe lost control, went into a skid, and gave his life to save that bunch-a kids. And there at that crossroads, was the end of the line for Big Joe and Phantom 309."

4. "Riding with Private Malone" - David Ball

David Ball - Amigo
Dualtone

The story of this song tells about a man who buys a used '66 Corvette and finds it comes with a ghostly soldier named Private Malone. One rainy night, while driving too fast, he misses the curb, and crashes the car. Witnesses to the crash say they saw a soldier pulling him out of the car.

Lyrics:

"But for every dream that shatters, there's another that comes true. This car was once a dream of his back when it was new. And I know I wouldn't be here if he hadn't tagged along. Yeah that night I was riding with Private Malone."

3. "The Carroll County Accident" - Porter Wagoner

Porter Wagoner - Rubber Room
MSI Music

This song tells the tale of a horrible auto crash. A woman was driving with a man as the passenger. She claims that the man she was taking (who was happily married) said he was sick and needed a ride to the hospital. The man died in the accident, but his wedding ring was not on his finger. The truth is found by one of the man's children, who finds the ring in a glovebox, inside a matchbox. Instead of telling about his father having an affair, he throws the ring down a well.

Lyrics:

"A little matchbox circled by a rubberband, and inside the ring from Walter Browning's hand. And it took a while to figure out just what it meant. The truth about the Carroll County accident."
