Ten Years of Winners - CMA Entertainer of the Year

by Shelly Fabian
for About.com

The Country Music Association gives out an award each year to the act displaying the greatest competence in all aspects of the entertainment field. The list below shows the last ten winners from 1987 - 2002. Several artists captured the award more than one time. I've listed the years next to their name below.

1. Almeria Club - Hank Williams Jr. (1987-88)

Almeria Club - Hank Williams Jr.
With over 70 albums recorded, Hank Williams Jr. doesn't need to prove anything to anyone. With this CD, he has decided to go back to his roots. He decided to record most of the CD at the Almeria club in Almeria, Alabama. Hank's father played at this converted schoolhouse years ago.

2. Strait Out Of The Box - George Strait (1989-90)

Strait Out Of The Box - George Strait
How can you go wrong with four CDs of George Strait classic hits? They include 31 #1 songs plus 19 choice album cuts. The songs cover his career from 1981 through 1995. A must for any Strait fan!

3. No Fences - Garth Brooks (1991-92, 1997-98)

This is Garth's second release, which was originally released in 1990, and had four singles, now five, if you count the updated version of "Wild Horses." The original singles were "The Thunder Rolls," "Two of a Kind, Workin' on a Full House," "Friends in Low Places," and "Unanswered Prayers."

4. High Lonesome Sound - Vince Gill (1993-94)

"High Lonesome Sound" contained four top ten singles and the title track which would go on to win a Grammy for Country Collaboration of the Year with Alison Krauss and Union Station in 1996. Also winning a Grammy in 1996 for Best Country Vocal Performance, Male; "Worlds Apart," also became a theme song with a stirring video depicting the tragedy at Oklahoma City.

5. When Somebody Loves You - Alan Jackson (1995)

One of country music's traditionalists, Alan Jackson continues to release classic country music, yet remain a contemporary artist, receiving airplay on today's country radio. This 2001 release includes such hits as "www.memory," "When Somebody Loves You," and "Where I Come From."

6. Brand New Man - Brooks & Dunn (1996)

When "Brand New Man" was first released, one of the phrases written about it was along the lines of "this disc is just plain fun." And that it is. Pure honky-tonkin' country music, straight from one of the best of the new traditionalists. Brooks and Dunn came on strong right from the start, showing they were not to be trifled with.

7. Come On Over - Shania Twain (1999)

This is Shania's most popular and best-selling CD with hits like "Man, I Feel Like a Woman!," "You're Still The One," "That Don't Impress Me Much," and "You've Got a Way" have made this album the #1 selling album anywhere with over 19 million copies sold.

8. Fly - Dixie Chicks (2000)

Despite the daunting task of recording their sophomore album and hoping they would at least match the success of Wide Open Spaces, the gals really knocked one out of the ballpark with "Fly." The album has sold 10 million so far.

9. Set This Circus Down - Tim McGraw (2001)

Tim McGraw has won the CMA Male Vocalist of the Year several years, but until 2001, the Entertainer of the Year award eluded him. This album contains "The Cowboy in Me," "Grown Men Don't Cry," "Unbroken," and "Angry All The Time."

10. Alan Jackson - Drive (2002)

With three Top 5 songs, including two Number Ones and the third sure to hit the top spot, Alan has produced another quality album. Alan Jackson truly has a gift of being great at any aspect of music, whether it is entertaining, writing, singing, or guitar playing - he gives it his all and it shows.
